New York gets the biggest Donkey Kong arcade machine

The Strong National Museum of Play in New York is not just for children of play. It is the only museum in the world devoted exclusively to the history and research of play. In all its forms. From Barbie to Monopoly to Zelda.

“The Strong”, as they say in New York, also houses, among others, the “International Center for the History of Electronic Games”, the “National Toy Hall of Fame” or the “World Video Game Hall of Fame”, into which new games are inducted every year.

Donkey Kong

In short, it is the world’s largest and most comprehensive collection of historical materials on the subject of games and an exciting destination for the next New York trip!

Now the museum has announced the (probably) world’s largest Donkey Kong arcade machine, which visitors to New York will be able to play on from 30 June 2023. The installation, which is over 6 metres high, comes in the classic design of the original from 1981. Nintendo has ensured this with the original graphics and layouts.

After all, “Donkey Kong” was the first arcade game back then in which the Italian plumber named Jumpman – better known today as Mario – could be steered through various levels.

Despite its enormous size, the machine can be controlled by anyone with normal controllers. So you don’t have to climb a ladder to use the oversized machine.

Whether the new exhibit will ultimately be the largest of its kind will have to be officially clarified in July of this year. This much is already certain: it will definitely be bigger than the almost five-metre-high NBA Jam machine that could be admired at CES 2020 and the similarly large Tetris installation that (still) holds the current Guinness World Record.
