Shortly after the release of the Mac mini and MacBook Pro with M2 Pro and M2 Max chips, Apple’s Tim Millet, VP of platform architecture, and Bob Borchers, VP of product marketing, talked about the future of gaming on the Mac, among other things, in an interview with TechCrunch.
As for games on the Mac, Borchers said it feels like Apple is making games on the Mac better with each new version of the M-Series chip. He further said that Apple is adding new APIs and expanding Metal with Metal 3, so there are “tremendous opportunities” for game makers. Apple plans to continue looking at chip configurations and components from a gaming perspective, and Millet added that while Apple’s goal is to turn the Mac into a serious gaming platform in the rather long term, the work here began in the early days of the transition to Apple Silicon.
“The story starts many years ago when we envisioned the change. Gamers are taking it quite seriously. And I don’t think we can fool anyone by saying we’re going to make the Mac a great gaming platform overnight. We’re going to take a long-term approach to this.”
According to Millet, Apple is working to build an installed base of strong GPUs. Apple wants the entire Mac lineup to have “very powerful GPUs,” from the MacBook Air to the Mac Studio with M1 Ultra. He also believes developers have yet to get used to M-series chips. “Game developers have never seen 96 gigabytes of graphics memory available to them now with the M2 Max,” Miller said. I think they’re trying to adjust to it because the possibilities are unusual.
