Good news for cloud and stream gamers: Valve has given its popular Steam Remote Play service a long-awaited update. It is now possible to stream games in impressive 4K quality with High Quality.
Steam Remote Play has allowed gamers to stream their Steam games – and even external titles – directly to smartphones, tablets or laptops for quite some time. However, until now certain limitations were noticeable, especially in the area of 4K streaming, which was often accompanied by performance losses. But this has now changed. The current beta update of the Steam client brings with it the long-awaited “4K High Quality Streaming Presets”.
But that is by no means all. Valve has made a number of other improvements and bug fixes:
General updates
- The Indonesian language is now supported.
- The settings window can be resized flexibly.
- Empty folders are no longer created when checking game installations.
- The “Back” button now works more reliably.
Optimisations in Big Picture mode
- Fixed problematic switching between full screen and windowed mode after closing full screen videos.
- Notifications no longer distract focus when displayed in overlay.
- Fixed a bug that caused the overlay to freeze when a file dialogue appeared.
To clarify, 4K streaming was already possible before, but with severely limited settings options and frequently occurring performance problems. The latest update promises a significant improvement in these aspects – a claim that was confirmed in our short tests.
The gaming community can thus look forward to a smoother and more visually impressive gaming experience, while Valve is continuously working to further optimise the streaming experience via Steam Remote Play.
