Sony Interactive buys Destiny maker Bungie
The next big takeover in the gaming industry is on the horizon. After Take-Two and Microsoft, it is now Sony’s turn to take over Bungie.
Sony Interactive Entertainment will pay $3.6 billion for the deal. After the deal is completed, Bungie will be an independent subsidiary of Sony Interactive Entertainment and will be led by current CEO Pete Parsons and the rest of the current management team. According to Sony, Bungie will remain a “multi-platform studio” – with the option to self-publish games. It was explicitly stated that Sony’s purchase should not affect the gaming experience of other platforms. The plan remains to continue developing Destiny. For all relevant devices on the market.
It’s kind of funny that Microsoft buys Blizzard, an important Playstation publisher, and Sony takes over Bungie, the very studio that delivered the first game hit for Microsoft’s Xbox, Halo, and is thus responsible for the console‘s success.
We will stay tuned and keep you up to date.
