Sega’s Cosmic Smash is coming for the PSVR2

Cosmic Smash is a sports and puzzle game that was released many years ago by Sega for arcade systems and the Dreamcast. According to a blog post by Sony, Cosmic Smash is being remade for the soon-to-be-released PlayStation VR2 (PSVR2).

The new version will be called C-Smash VRS, which apparently stands for a “VR and Versus” sports game. Even though the PlayStation VR2 is not even sold yet, a demo of the game has been announced for 23 March.

In the trailer, you already get to see small samples of the gameplay, where you hit a ball at an opponent and a wall. Sega advertised the original game at the time as a mix of “virtual reality squash” and block smashing gameplay, similar to titles like Blasterball or Breakout.

The aesthetic is somewhat reminiscent of Superhot, with the polygonal white avatars and bright highlight colours – although the original Cosmic Smash came out in 2001 and had a very similar look, so perhaps it would be fairer to say Superhot looks like Cosmic Smash.

The PSVR2 is due to go on sale on 22 February with a range of games including Gran Turismo 7, Horizon Call of the Mountain, Tetris Effect and Pistol Whip.
