Sony recently launched the PlayStation VR2 virtual reality headset, and already there are signs that it could surpass its predecessor in terms of sales.
The first-generation PSVR headset was released for the PS4 in 2016 and sold over five million units worldwide. According to Sony, there is a “good chance” that the PlayStation VR2 headset will surpass these sales figures, although there are actually no official figures yet.
Hiroki Totoki, Sony’s executive deputy president and chief financial officer, was positive about the launch of PlayStation VR2. He said that Sony is very happy to have released the VR2 headset for the PS5 and that there is a good chance it will surpass the sales figures of its predecessor. Totoki also pointed to forecasts that the VR market would grow strongly in the next few years and that PlayStation VR2 could benefit from this growth.
However, the headset’s high entry price could be a hurdle for many prospective buyers. The cheapest model without software costs 599.99 euros, while the bundle with the game “Horizon: Call of the Mountain” costs 50 euros more. However, the high price is justified by the technical features of the headset. Overall, it remains to be seen how PlayStation VR2 will develop on the market and whether it will actually surpass the success of its predecessor.
