This week, three more major publishers – Ubisoft, Sega and Tencent’s Level Infinite – cancelled their participation at E3 2023.
These cancellations have fuelled rumours that the show may be on the verge of cancellation. More publishers are expected to publicly announce their cancellations soon.
Ubisoft had initially agreed to appear at E3 2023, but later decided not to attend. Sega, creators of the popular Sonic and Yakuza game series, also announced that they will not be appearing at E3 2023, but will be talking about their projects shortly. Tencent’s Level Infinite will instead use Play Days 2023, organised by Geoff Keighley, to showcase selected projects.
The reasons for these cancellations are unclear, but some publishers apparently prefer other events to showcase their products. For example, publisher Devolver Digital, which specialises in indie productions, will hold its own digital event to announce new projects, as in previous years.
Other major publishers such as Bandai Namco Entertainment are also expected to cancel their participation at E3 2023, as they have already confirmed their participation at Play Days 2023. Some sources have even reported that the organisers of E3 2023 may cancel the entire event, as there have been many cancellations from major publishers in recent weeks.
Overall, there is a lot of speculation about what these cancellations could mean for the future of E3. Some believe that the show may be on the verge of ending, while others hope that the E3 organisers will be able to regain the trust of the publishers and continue the show in the future.
